University of Waterloo Teams-Up for Local Build in Kitchener

Thursday July 17, 2014 - the sun is shining, the birds are chirping, the temp is cool - it's a beautiful day for a build. Members of the University of Waterloo community, some of which are participating in the upcoming UW Habitat build in Whitehorse, teamed up to participate in a local build in Kitchener. It was a great day filled with lots of hard work, new friends, and the feeling of helping out our fellow KW community members.

The local Habitat affiliate provided us with some great safety training to get us prepared for the day ahead. They also treated us to a delicious lunch and unlimited cold drinks to keep us hydrated throughout the day. THANK YOU!

Some of us started the day off dismantling scaffolding, while others began site clean up and moving materials closer to the next unit.

Then we really put our backs into it while shoveling and raking rocks to cover soon-to-be basement floors. This is where things got interesting...

...we had people chattin' on the job...

...we had day dreamers...

...we even had a fight break out!

JUST KIDDING! Everyone worked really hard to accomplish this task together! We all split up into 3 or 4 basement units and got the job done :)

The afternoon was spent gathering the logs and branches the tree-cutting crew cut down and tossing them in the wood chipper.

And even though we were very busy, we still made some time to do a quick 3pm plank!
Overall, it was a fantastic day to work with UW colleagues and support a local build site. We extend our deepest gratitude to Habitat for Humanity for all that they do, and for providing us with an amazing experience. In less than 2 week's time, some of us will be heading to Whitehorse, Yukon to continue our Habitat experience up north. Until then...thanks for reading!

Olivia
